(jp) = Russian President Vladimir Putin made a surprise visit to the war-torn Mariupol port in Ukraine’s Donbas region, his first visit to a Russian-occupied territory since the conflict began, according to state media. This visit occurred just two days after the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Putin for war crimes related to the illegal transfer of Ukrainian children across the border. Mariupol, which was the site of a bloody battle and fell to Russian control in May, was visited by Putin as part of celebrations marking nine years since Russia annexed Crimea. The visit was seen by some as a defiant act in response to the ICC warrant.
