(jp) = Sarah Jane Cavanaugh, a Rhode Island woman who falsely claimed to be a veteran with cancer, has been sentenced to nearly six years in prison and ordered to repay over $250,000 in donations and benefits she had fraudulently collected. During her seven years of deception, Cavanaugh wore Marine combat attire and collected funds under the pretext of charitable donations, veteran benefits, and donations. She had received over $207,000 from the Wounded Warrior Project during 2017-2021. Cavanaugh pleaded guilty to fraud and forgery charges that included claiming and receiving benefits and services for cancer treatment and an injury from an improvised explosive device during service in Iraq.
